What it says. Merchandise exports rose 23.04% to 44.40 billion dollars. Imports were 74.61 billion dollars, leaving a deficit of 30.21 billion. For April to September, merchandise exports were 259.89 billion dollars, up 18.51%. Electronic goods exports grew 70.44% in September, and engineering goods also led. A flash manufacturing PMI of 54.9 for October was reported on 23 Oct, slightly below September’s 55.1 but still in growth territory (Trading Economics).

SMARTE view. Factories are busy, and the two sectors leading exports, electronics and engineering goods, are our customers’ customers. A 70% jump in electronics exports means more motors, coils and boards, which means more wire. The caution is that the import bill is growing faster than our comfort, so raw materials we buy abroad cost more.
