Pliny’s Ancient Solder

Roman writer Pliny the Elder described lead-tin solders almost two thousand years ago, including a two-to-one lead-tin mix called tertiarium. Roman plumbers used such alloys on pipe seams. The English word solder itself comes from the Latin solidare, meaning to make solid.

Solder Wire.

Solder wire is a metal alloy drawn into wire that melts at a low temperature and joins electrical and metal parts. It is supplied either as solid wire or with a flux core. The flux cleans oxide from the surfaces as the solder melts, so the alloy wets properly and forms a sound joint.

SMARTE VENTURES PVT LTD (formerly Shree Madhav Agencies Pvt. Ltd.) manufactures solder wire from high-grade virgin metals. The solder business descends from our founder company, Shree Smelting, a 45-year name in tin and lead products. We supply the following types.

Product Types

Rosin core solder wire

Wire with a continuous flux core. It is supplied in rosin-activated and urea-based flux types, in various diameters from 12 to 22 SWG. Flux grades include:

  • RMA-1: Low halide content (0.5% max.), non-corrosive activated flux. Used in electronic equipment such as televisions, telecommunications and computers.
  • RMA-2: Higher halide content (1% max.). Suited to difficult surfaces and mass-production items such as lamps, capacitors and fuses.
  • RMA-3: Mild activity, free of halogen-based activators. Used in defence electronics and avionics.
No-clean solder wire

Non-corrosive, resin-based flux with low-to-medium residue that is electrically safe and does not need cleaning in most uses. It is compatible with lead-free alloys. Where cleaning is wanted, residue can be removed with isopropyl alcohol or methylated spirit.

Lead-free and RoHS-compliant solder

Lead-free solder alloys and RoHS-compliant solder, For products sold into markets with restrictions on lead.

Solid solder wire

Solder without flux, made from high-purity metals in the required tin/lead compositions and gauges.

Other types
  • Corrosive acid-core solder wire: For metal fabrication such as radiators and tin containers, and for soldering fuse wire to detonators. It replaces zinc chloride fluxes.
  • Water-soluble flux-cored wire: Used in telecommunication equipment. The flux is corrosive and must be cleaned with deionised water.
  • Silver solder: In the 62/36/2 grade (Sn/Pb/Ag).

Other forms: Solder paste and solder sticks, as listed in the brochure.
