In the 1950s geochemist Clair Patterson used lead isotopes from the Canyon Diablo meteorite to calculate Earth’s age at about 4.55 billion years. Lead is the final stable product of uranium and thorium decay, so its isotope ratios act as a natural clock inside ancient rocks.

Lead tubes are hollow lead sections made by extrusion. Lead is soft, malleable and ductile, and it resists attack from many corrosive chemicals. This makes lead tube useful where aggressive fluids or fumes would damage other metals.
