The name changed. The family didn't. Mr. Brij Ratan Bhatter began trading base metals in 1989 as Shree Madhav Agencies. Copper arrived in 2008, brought in by Managing Director Mr. Madhav Bhatter. Today it's SmartE, with real-time engineering and real-time compliance, and a name our clients keep finishing for us.
Energetic, they say. Easy to work with, they say. We're aiming for eternal.
The business has changed shape more than once since 1989. Trading became manufacturing, copper became a bigger conversation, and Kolkata was joined by Haridwar and Gujarat. Growth came one practical decision at a time. The map simply got bigger along the way.
What hasn't changed is how we look at the business. Know the material, understand where it is going, and make sure it does its job when it gets there. Specifications matter. So do relationships. In our business, both are expected to last.
Today, SmartE is building for industries that are themselves changing fast like energy, mobility, infrastructure and everything they connect. That means more capacity, smarter systems and new materials. We know where we started. We're more interested in where all this can go.
Scale has brought more plants, more products and more markets into the picture. But getting bigger was never the interesting part. Building a business that stays dependable while it grows that is the part worth getting right.
There is still plenty ahead of us: new materials, new industries and probably a few opportunities we haven't named yet. We have never been particularly interested in standing still. 1989 gave us a starting point. Not a finish line.
Metals and minerals are how we do it – copper, aluminium, and critical minerals, tested to a standard that doesn’t bend. The wire is only ever the means. What we’re really building is the infrastructure the next energy era runs on.
To power the shift the world is making from fossil to electric, from centralized to distributed, one conductor at a time. We don’t announce that shift. We carry it, quietly, through every transformer, battery pack, and grid our copper reaches.
Shree Madhav Agencies started in Kolkata as a base metals trading business, built on market knowledge, relationships and an instinct for opportunity. It was a modest beginning. The ambition wouldn't stay that way.
SmartE restarted its lead business while expanding copper operations at the Kolkata facility. What began as a renewed focus soon laid the groundwork for a much larger metals operation.
The next chapter took SmartE to Haridwar, Uttarakhand, with a new manufacturing facility. More capacity, a wider operating base and another important step in building for scale.
Gujarat became the next point on the map with a new manufacturing facility in Mundra. More capacity, stronger logistics and a structure designed for where the business is headed next.
